Functional Training with a Partner

Putting the FUN in FUNctional training while saving money – that’s Partner Functional Training!

One of the best ways to stay motivated in the new year is to train with a friend under the guidance of a functional training expert. Ideally, you and your friend would be at the same general fitness level to start. For example, both beginners, or intermediate, etc. Each hour session starts out with a gradual warm-up, with the better part of the session involving sustained but modulated, engaging and challenging, full-body, multi-joint functional exercises that boost metabolism, employ and prime all three energy systems, and sets in motion some serious gains over 10 weeks in strength, endurance, power, coordination and finesse. It doesn’t get any more practical and efficient than that. Partner training makes economic sense as well: twice the fun at less than the regular personal training rate.

What really makes partner training a joy for me as a trainer is the fun, synergy and motivation that kicks in when friends train with friends.

Many of my partner training clients share similar goals with their training partner through planned athletic endeavours such as a summer back-packing excursion, a ski-tour, bicycling journeys or at the very least the common bond of wanting to lose weight, get fit and improve one’s function and quality of life. With a friend, you have extra inspiration and challenge towards these goals. Feel like dropping out? Call your friend to tell them, right? It’s easier to work through it than to tell your training partner you’ve quit. The support makes it possible to achieve goals beyond what you thought you could.

In both one-to-one personal training and partner training situations, Athletic Endeavours always focuses on functional training methodologies to offer a variety of fun, effective ways to get you on track to a personal best or simply a fit and healthy lifestyle. Try one of the options described below either one-on-one with a trainer or even add in a friend or two. Everyone has different needs, capacities and goals so I have come up with a broad range of possibilities for you to use functional training as a pathway to ultimate fitness and performance.

Option A

The One-Hour Consultation and Partner Training session is designed for those:

  • who want to consult with an experienced, certified functional training expert and experience an introductory functional training partner workout
  • with little or no gym experience who want a succinct introduction to the idea of “functional training” with a partner
  • with gym experience who are currently working out conventionally and suspect there are more and interesting ways to train
  • who are familiar with the fundamentals of strength and endurance training
  • who want to go beyond weight machines and conventional training

The Goal

The goal of this single session partner training consolation and session is to introduce you and your training partner to the concept and practical options associated with functional training in a gym setting:

  • help you experience a basic partner workout of challenging functional training exercises
  • introduce the concept of fundamental movement themes
  • learn to use a basic range of equipment options
  • learn to sequence and program a complete workout
  • start to think ‘outside the box’ of what you ‘normally’ do

What’s Included

  • 10 minute initial phone consultation with each of the training partners
  • 1.0 hour hands-on partner training session


Option B

The Intensive Program centers around ongoing directed one-on-one or small group personal training with an emphasis on balanced and creative functional training workouts:

  • less focus on learning skills and more focus on an intense, directed workout
  • just workout – let me do the “best practices” programming and the motivating!
  • works well with clients pressed for spare time and motivation
  • an ideal option for buddy training at a much lower price point
  • enjoy the full benefits of functional training
  • experience a broad range of skills and functional exercises
  • avoid common mistakes by letting my experience take away the guess work

The Goal

The goal of this program is to provide you (and your friend) with a full-on, effective, time-efficient functional workout:

  • by subjecting you to a broad ranging repertoire of functional training exercises
  • remove the guesswork – I will ensure that your position and posture are optimized for each exercise
  • leave each session knowing (and feeling!) that you’ve done your best

  • 7.5 minute initial phone consultation with each of the training partners
  • 10 x 1.0 hour fully-directed, hands-on training sessions
  • 7.5 minute follow-up phone consultation with each of the training partners
